History of geography

There are different periods of geography history.These are following:

In history of geography we will study different periods of major contributors
.

Greek contributors:

• Tales of Miletus: (624 - 546 B.C)   

He was first who wondered about the shape of the earth and assumed it to be a flat disk that floating on water.He also introduced Mathematical rules and geometry to measuring land area.

• Anaximander: (610 - 546 B.C)

He is father of astronomy and cosmology.He was the first who attempted to create first scale map of that time of known world.Then it was published that was the first published world map.He introduced an instrument that is known as Gnomon.

• Hecateus: (560 - 418 B.C)

He was the author of survey of the earth.He focused on observation collection of previous works and asking the sailors who coming from the busy port of Miletus. In this way he wrote a detail description of the world known that time.

• Herodotus: (484 - 425 B.C)

His most of work till use now a days.Basically he was a historian but his writing contain a wealth of geographical description.He wrote about EGYPT ,SYRIA, PERSIA (Iran) and ASIA, MINOR( Armenia and turkey east part).He observed the phenomena of tides in Red Sea.He was first who noted the process of Delta formation e.g Nile Delta. He was also first person who noted that wind blow from cold region to the hot region.

• Pythagoras: 

He was mathematician and the first who assumed that earth is like spherical type.

• Eudoxus:

He was the person who divided the earth into temperature zones.Hence give climate zones based on latitudes.
Torrid zone, North Temperate zone, South Temperate zone, North Frigid zone, South Frigid zone.

• Eratosthenes: ( 279 - 194 B.C)

He was first who coined the Word GEOGRAPHY. so he is known as father of geography.He calculated the circumference of earth based on his calculation.He calculated it to be 39,690 Km and current measurement showed that it is 40,057 Km.
